Alexander Island

Shortly after Admiral Bellinghausen of the Imperial Russian Navy first sighted Antarctica in January 1820 came the discovery of Alexander Island. Located within the Antarctic Circle, this ice-covered isle figured prominently in many early British expeditions, and was very much a part of the "heroic age" of Antarctic exploration.

In January of 1820, Admiral Bellingshausen of the Imperial Russian Navy first sighted Antarctica. Over the course of two Antarctic summers, Admiral Bellingshausen became only the second man in history to circumnavigate the continent and took a far more southerly route than Cook.

Located far within the Antarctic Circle, Alexander Island is an ice-covered rocky outpost that has served many early expeditions and played an important role during the "heroic age" of Antarctic exploration.
